Sled journeys in the Ittoqqortoormiit area
½ Daytrip – village visit
The guides , attending the tour are mainly Greenlandic hunters or former members of the Danish Sled patrol , Sirius . With local guides you will be safe , exploring the Greenlandic nature and wild life .
The hunters not only knows the conditions , the weather , the country and the dogs , they will also inform you about the culture , the hunting etc.
You will be fully equipped with boots and sled outfit . The guide will bring warm tea and coffee.
The trip :
We will meet in the tourist office in the morning . The guide will escort you to the sled and while the sledge is being prepared , the dogs will be more and more excited to start the journey . The trip may start a bit dramatically , since the dogs are very impatient in the mornings .
Off we go and the sled , the guide and the guest are being pulled quickly over the frozen sea ice , by a team of 10-12 dogs.
We head for Kap Tobin in a good sled trail . The village was once bigger than Scoresbysund , but today it is deserted and the houses are only being used as summer houses .
We follow the trail through to the village and turn right through a huge passage between two cliffs .
We will make a stop at the hot springs , which are the warmest in Greenland ( about 62 degrees) .
In the spring , polar bears are often observed close to Kap Tobin , so if we are in luck , we might spot one . There is a living wildlife along the ice edge and there is a good chance of seeing seals and sea birds .
It is possible to either make a short walk in Kap Tobin on the return trip , or to make a short trip along the ice edge .
