Because of its northerly location, Ittoqqortoormiit has midnight sun from late May to late July. Of course this means that that the sun does not rise above the horizon between late November and mid-January.
The rugged dark basalt mountains of the Blossville Coast along the southern shores of the Scoresbysund Fjord system mark the transition between ecological systems, which characterise the High Arctic, and those of the Central Arctic. Ocean and fjord currents typically maintain an area of open water along the mouth of the fjord (a polonya) that is a haven for a variety of marine wildlife all year long.
Guided sledge journeys can begin in January, but because of the low temperatures and short day length, most travellers prefer to wait until the end of February. By middle June, fjord ice begins to melt and long sledge trips are no longer possible.
From the middle of July, the watercraft season usually starts. Until October it is possible to sail along the fantastic outer-coast, or to the Northeas t Greenland National Park, the world’s largest National Park. It is also possible to travel westward into the world’s longest and deepest fjord-system, Scoresby Sund.
Nanu Travel recommends that sledge trips be arranged between the 1st of March and the 1s t of June and boat expeditions between the 20th of July and the 14th of September.
Nanu Travel can arrange journeys along Liverpool Land, in Scoresby Sund, or in the National Park which is located less than 50 km northward from Scoresby Sund. The field staff of Nanu Travel has extensive first-hand knowledge of northeast Greenland, many are hunters or former members of the Danish Military SIRIUS sledge patrol.
