Kiijali East Greenland Dog Sledding was founded by Jokum and Shelley, who share a deep love for this land, its traditions, and its dogs. The company ‘Kiijali’ was found because the owners strongly believe that dog sledding is one of the most special ways to experience East Greenland, not only for its breathtaking scenery, but also for the connection it brings to the community and the next generation of mushers.
Dog sledding is an incredible tradition that deserves to be kept alive. There’s something truly moving about watching the dogs do what they were born to do, working together across the ice, strong and focused.
What Shelley appreciates most about dog sledding is that once you’re on the sled, that’s all you’re thinking about. You’re focused on the dogs, the surroundings, watching the ice, scanning for wildlife, and listening to the silence. Every year is different; the way the ice forms and shifts is always changing, always fascinating.
Jokum and his family have a long history in Kulusuk and share many stories about how life here has evolved over the years. Shelley is from Canada and has spent many years working in hospitality and at ski lodges. Now, they call Kulusuk their home, and with their own team of dogs, they are proud to share this unique Arctic way of life with others.
Their multi-day dog sledding adventures combine existing outdoor adventures on the sled with a genuine cultural experience. Small-group format ensures meaningful interaction with the mushers and their dogs, as well as the chance to experience daily life in Kulusuk more closely.
All of their tours follow the traditional East Greenlandic way, which means that guests do not self-drive the sleds but take part in the journey by assisting with the dogs, helping to set up camp, and learning from the local mushers. With years of dog sledding experience and deep local knowledge, they are thrilled to invite you for a truly memorable experience on their dog sled.
