Tasiilaq, the largest town in East Greenland, is nestled on Ammassalik Island at the King Oscar Harbour. This captivating destination, located 100km south of the Arctic Circle, is home to about 1.800 residents. With a river that gracefully bisects the town and high mountains enclosing it, Tasiilaq emanates a picturesque charm that’s truly unparalleled.
Tasiilaq invites its guests to a world of exploration. The town, spanned across 6 kilometers of paved roads from one end of town to the other, unfolds a diverse landscape offering scenic outlooks and picturesque viewpoints due to its hilly terrain. Each vantage point offers an awe-inspiring perspective, with the towering mountains creating a breathtaking backdrop.
Despite its secluded location, reached from the regional airport in Kulusuk by boat or helicopter, Tasiilaq is commendably self-reliant, hosting a range of facilities. Supplies are arriving by the supply ships from end of May to the end of November, and small-scale supplies are flown in during winter period. Notably, the town encompasses several shops, including the supermarket Pilersuisoq, RF Kiosk, Navarana and a hardware store. Apart from food, those shops also sell household items, clothing, electronics and furniture. The big multi-purpose supermarket, Pilersuisoq, also feature ATMs for the convenience of locals and visitors.

Tasiilaq is a cultural melting pot, with its roots in local traditions. It was once known as Ammassalik/Angmagssalik in West Greenlandic and is referred to as Ammatsali in East Greenlandic, due to the area being a prime location for catching the capelin fish ‘Ammassat’.
You can dive into the history of the town by visiting the local museum and photo museum. Local art and craft can be bought several places in town. From the flower valley to outdoor recreational facilities such as the big football field, ski lift and also indoor facilities such as the Igdlo cultural house and indoor sports hall are for the joy of the community.

The new church, built in 1989, stands out with its pentagon shape, stone facade, flat tapering roof, and the pointed dome in the center. A simply yet beautiful interior that features decorative items representation the cultural and natural beauty of this region.
